Went riding today, just as I said yesterday. The overnight temps were around 20 degrees and the high today was 28 degrees, so I thought it would be safe to ride my mountian bike.
I only planned on a couple of hours, which was about a lap and a half at Great Seal. It was much slower due to the light snowfall and the mud was frozen up into these crunchy things that I can only describe as riding in deep gravel.
Nevertheless, I was glad to be outside and on my mountain bike, rather than indoors on the trainer.
When it comes to winter riding, I really don't mind the cold that much. Once I get warmed up, I am fine. The hard part is deciding what to wear. Not enough and you're cold, too much and your sweating a lot. I really should write stuff down, because every winter I can't remember what worked good for what temps.
Today, I wore my Lake boots, which are at least 5 or 6 years old. (Joe bought me a new pair of Louis Garneau boots rated for 5 degrees, but they won't be available until later this month or early Feb.) My Lake boots have never failed me! I have zero complaints about them, except the laces on the inner boot get tangled in the velcro straps, but no big deal.
I also wore my Nike windstopper bibs and a Nike longsleeved jersey with some windstopper across the shoulders and half way down the sleeves. My jersey has a special pocket on the upper of my left sleeve in which I put my cell phone in case of an emergency.
Under all that, I wore a pair of 29er Crew bib shorts and a Nike underarmor jersey that is lightly fleece lined.
Overtop of all that, I wore a Nike windstopper jacket. All of which I purchased from the Trekstore last winter. They no longer carry Nike products, but do carry Trek brand clothing as well as Pearl Izumi clothing which is comparible to the Nike clothing.
On the way there and back I wore my Pearl Izumi jacket that I purchased from the Trekstore a couple weeks ago and my legion cap. I have to look really cool going to ride my mountain bike. (too bad I can't pull it off, but who cares, it keeps my head warm)
Anyways, I rode for a couple of hours today at our secret training place which isn't so secret anymore. Nice day to be out, the snow wasn't very deep and the sun was in and out of the clouds.
On the way home, I got honked at by Dan-the_Man who was headed south for work. He called to tell me that he was jealous. Haha!!
Gotta go, I'm headed over to the new home to work on primering the place.
Stay tuned for my "write up" on my new Rudy Project Sportmask glasses. (not so sure about them)
