As the muddiest race yet!! For me anyways, I heard others mention that The Wilds was worse, I chose not to go to that one just for that reason.
Here are a couple of pictures of Joe and I at the race (thanks Bob for the pics), but the real story for the day comes from another rider.
Joe and I split for the day, he went back for day two of the Tour de Grandview criteriums and I headed south near Cincinnati for stop five of the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship. Joe was "on-call" for work this weekend so he couldn't go far.
After sharing race stories, it sounded like he didn't do too bad. He started with 67 riders in his class. It was a tough course with a pretty long, steeper hill in it. They were dropping like flies in all categories. He said that he hung on to the last 25 riders or so with 4 laps to go when he ran out of gas. Glad I headed to the mtb race, because the women got rained on again today.
Joe and I slipped to the "other" side today to participate in the Tour De Grandview Criterium. We both got to wear our new skinsuits, which was cool.
Joe went first of the two of us. He raced with the cat 3/4's at 3:00pm. His race took off and I was sitting at the second turn (of four) with the camera. The field was too big for me to find him when they came around on the first lap, but I did spot Joe towards the rear of the group. Second lap, they come around turn one and a huge pile up occurs. I was petrified! I thought for sure that he was involved, but here he comes, so I snapped a picture. He had moved up to the middle/front of the pack.
I was waiting to begin this post until they got the coverage from the race this past weekend. They usually get some pretty good pictures of the racers, Joe and I both raced, so I didn't get any photos of my own.
What a great race it was! Taking place at the Calhoun County Park in Grantsville WV, the Appalachian Classic was stop #7 on the WVMBA calendar. They were guaranteeing a sweet payout for the women, so I thought I should go give it a try. That, and I haven't been to a race in 7 weeks, yikes!
Okay, okay! I know this surgery took place at the end of October 2007, however, I have my days. Like any other person who's had bones cut and pins put in, I guess. Joe says it's a normal way of life for him. He shattered his heal a while back racing his dirt bike and had it totally rebuilt with lots of pins. Not like the piddly little thing they call a pin that was put into the joint of my big toe. Whoopty-do.
Alum Creek that is. I believe this is the first full week that it's been open since February. It's rained that much. But it's all good, the trail is dry now, so it should hold up pretty good from here on out.
Don't really have much to say, but I did get some pictures today of the new bridge/boardwalk (whatever you want to call it) that they put in towards the end of last year.
I've run out of pictures to show you as I haven't taken my camera with me on the past few rides. I do, however, want to let you know that the rain has subsided, the trails are dry, the skies are sunny and I have found my motivation again.
At this time my motivation is the coveted stars and stripes jersey I would possibly get for winning at Nationals. I don't know if they would give one out for my class, but they said they had a bunch to give away. And, if not, the title alone is just fine.
We've been out on our road bikes mostly and there's nothing exciting about the route we take, so I don't take my camera. The next time I am up at phase II of Alum Creek, however, I will. They've put in a new banked bridge up there that is HUGE!! I will get them to you soon.
